Tourism in Rigolet
During the summer months, the Northern Ranger (www.labradormarine.com)
offers affordable transportation along the Northern & Southern
coasts
of Labrador. Utilized by local residents for shipping and travelling
purposes, the ferry service has been identified as an essential
factor attracting a growing tourist population to our region.
With isolation limiting access to Rigolet during the winter and
spring seasons, the
summer months welcome an influx of eager sightseers to the area.
In response to growing industry demands, tourism
coordinator Candice Elson has been hired for an eight week term.
Employed to develop services & venues showcasing Rigolet's
history and culture for visiting tourists, the coordinator is
marketing the entire community as a 'must see' destination as
opposed to focusing promotion on individual areas of interest.
The tourism department is working in cooperation with community
members and local organizations to preserve Rigolet's history
and present it accurately to travelers.
Rigolet has developed tourism initiatives highlighting
its community history, culture, and landscape. The designation
and restoration of the Hudson Bay Company Net Loft into a museum,
the operating of a
local Craft Center, along with the construction of a scenic shore
line board walk stretching one kilometer in length, identifies
Rigolet as a diverse and opportunistic tourist destination.During
Northern Ranger stop overs in the community on Monday evenings
and Friday mornings, tourist are met by the tourism coordinator
who offers guided tours of the community and boardwalk, an informative
visit to the Net Loft museum and access to the Craft Center. There
are guided tours on Saturday and Sunday.
As well, an exciting venue has recently been
developed and offered to traveling sightseers. On Monday evenings,
tourists are invited to sample such traditional Inuit delecacies
& fresh rolls smothered in Red Berry and Bake Apple jams,
all of which are locally donatted and prepared.
Rigolet Square Dancers preform for the group
as they enjoy their appetizers. After completing their taste test,
tourist are invited to learn a local dance and participate in
its prefromance. This event is well recieved and serves as a great
introduction to the culture and people of the community.Tours
are scheduled to continue throughout the summer.
